Our Research Project

The "Labour Market Participation of Young People in Sierra Leone" Study (2024–2027)

This research project investigates the factors that enable or hinder access to decent employment for young people in Sierra Leone. It explores the complex interplay between education, labour market structures, youth aspirations, gender dynamics, and social hierarchies. This study allows young people to share their opinions, experiences and feelings on labour market participation. A special focus is made on the role of gender, ethnic belonging, and socio-economic status in the employment processes.

The data are gathered in three urban centres of Sierra Leone: Freetown, Makeni and Bo. The mixed-methods research project combines in-depth qualitative study with a large-scale quantitative survey. Together, these methods provide a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities young people face in navigating the labour market.
